Who is new to Laurel Ridge this year in our kindergarten classroom and loves reading, design, and travel? It's Mr. Creek, Laurel Ridge's Kindergarten Exceptional Education Co-Teacher! Find out more about what he enjoys most about working with students, his favorite children's book, and more.
1) How long have you worked as an educator?
This is my second year in an elementary classroom, and my first year teaching at Laurel Ridge Elementary as a Kindergarten Exceptional Education Co-Teacher. I previously worked in Pre-K Exceptional Education. I come from a social science background in Psychology and Criminology!
2) What does a typical day look like for you at school?
Every day starts with greeting students at the door and setting a positive tone. From there, I co-teach whole group lessons, provide small-group instruction, and tailor activities to meet each child’s individual needs. A big part of my day is also supporting transitions, helping students regulate, and celebrating small wins that build into big successes.
3) What’s one thing you wish parents and caregivers knew about your role?
I wish families knew how much thought goes into every support and accommodation. When I adapt a lesson or create a scaffold, it’s not about making things “easier”—it’s about giving students access so they can show their true abilities and grow with confidence.
4) What do you enjoy most about working with students?
The joy is in the breakthroughs—when a student who’s been struggling suddenly makes a connection, or when they light up because they realize, “I can do this!” Those moments are everything.
5) What was your favorite subject when you were in elementary school?
I always loved reading. Books gave me both an escape and a window into different worlds—and they continue to fuel my teaching today.
6) Do you have a favorite children’s book or story to share?
Yes!The Book with No Pictures by B.J. Novak. It never fails to get kids laughing while showing them how powerful words alone can be.
7) Do you have any hobbies or favorite activities outside of school?
I enjoy traveling and exploring new places with my husband. I also love designing things—whether it’s a classroom poster, a presentation, or fun STEM experiments. Creativity keeps me energized.
